Why a security page closes B2B deals
In most B2B purchases, a security review sits between interest and signature. Someone on the buyer’s side has to confirm your product will not become their incident. A security page closes deals because it answers that person’s questions in advance, before they turn into a questionnaire that drags the deal out for weeks.
Without one, the reviewer sends you a spreadsheet of 120 questions. You answer slowly because you are also building the product. Two weeks pass and the champion who liked you loses momentum.
A good page short-circuits that loop. The reviewer lands on it, finds the eight things their checklist asks about, confirms each one, and clears you. The objection never gets raised in a meeting because the page raised and answered it first. You are doing the reviewer’s work for them, in public, so they can say yes faster.
There is a second effect that matters for a small company. To a technical reviewer, a vendor who has thought through subprocessors and incident response has thought through the rest of the product too. The page sells competence, not just compliance.
The sections buyers actually scan
Buyers do not read a security page top to bottom. They skim the headers and stop on the one or two sections their own policy forces them to verify. The page is really a set of labeled answers, each header mapped to a question a reviewer is told to ask. Here are the sections that earn their place.
Data handling. What data you collect, where it lives, and what you do with it. Name the regions and providers. If customer data sits in a specific Cloudflare or database region, say so. Reviewers want to know the data is not quietly shipped somewhere they cannot account for.
Encryption in transit and at rest. State that traffic runs over TLS and data at rest is encrypted, then say what provides each. Incident response. What you do when something goes wrong, and how fast you tell affected customers. Even a one-paragraph plan beats silence. Reviewers know small companies have small plans; they are checking that a plan exists and that notification is part of it.
Compliance status. Where you stand on SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, or whatever applies to your market. One line, not the headline. If you hold nothing yet, the honest version is a plain statement of current status plus a dated roadmap.
Contact. A real address to reach a human about security, ideally security@yourdomain. A page with no contact tells a reviewer there is no one home. Add a line on how to report a vulnerability.
What should you write before you have SOC 2?
Write an honest posture, the real controls you run, and a dated roadmap. That is the entire pre-SOC-2 security page. The mistake founders make is treating the audit as a prerequisite for the page. It is not. The page describes how you protect data today, and you protect data today whether or not an auditor has signed anything.
Start with a plain statement of where you are. Something like: we are an early company and do not yet hold a SOC 2 report; here is exactly how we secure your data in the meantime. That sentence does more for trust than any badge, because it tells the reviewer you will not inflate. Everything else on the page now reads as credible by default.
Then describe the real practices. A solo founder on a modern stack already has a real security story: a reputable host, a managed database with encryption at rest, TLS everywhere, a secrets manager, MFA on every account. Written down accurately, that is a respectable page. The controls existed before the audit; the audit just attests to them.
Finish with a dated roadmap. If SOC 2 is planned, say when you intend to start the readiness work, and be honest that it is intent, not a finished result. How long does SOC 2 take and what does it cost?
Plan in quarters and five figures, not in weeks and a subscription. A Type I report attests to your controls at a single point in time. A Type II report requires an observation window, commonly three to twelve months, during which the controls have to genuinely run and produce evidence. The auditor’s fee is only one line of the bill.

Scope is the lever you actually control. Only the Security criterion is mandatory under the Trust Services Criteria. Availability, Confidentiality, Processing Integrity, and Privacy are each optional, and each one you add widens the audit and the bill. Treat any published cost figure as a starting point and get real quotes. Scope changes the number by multiples, and a quote for a five-person company looks nothing like one for fifty.
The sequencing question is the one worth arguing about. The case for starting early is real in regulated markets: if you sell into healthcare or financial services, no report means no deal, and the observation window means you cannot start when the deal appears. Start static. A single well-written page on your own domain covers every buyer question at zero added cost and full control over the words. For a pre-revenue or early-revenue company, that is the right tool. You are not yet fielding enough reviews to justify a portal, and the hand-written page is easier to keep honest because you wrote every line.
Move to a trust center when the manual work starts to hurt. The signal is repetition: the same document requests every week, the same questionnaire fields retyped, buyers asking for your report under NDA and you emailing files around by hand. At that volume, a portal that lets a buyer self-serve documents under a click-through NDA saves real hours and reduces the chance you send the wrong file to the wrong person.
A trust center is packaging, not a substitute for having something true to say. If the underlying controls are thin, a polished portal just makes the thinness load faster. Get the static page right first. The portal is an upgrade you buy when volume forces it.
How do you answer a security questionnaire without a security team?
Keep an answer bank. Every question you answer once gets stored with its final wording, the date you last reviewed it, and a link to the evidence behind it. The second questionnaire becomes editing rather than writing, and most of what buyers ask repeats across companies with only the phrasing changed.
Structure the bank as a plain file in the same repository as your security page, so a control change and its questionnaire answer move together and drift becomes visible in a diff. Four columns is enough: the question, your canonical answer, the last review date, and where the evidence lives. Review the dates quarterly. An answer that was true a year ago and has not been checked since is the one that fails a review.
Pre-fill from a standard rather than waiting for a buyer’s spreadsheet. The Cloud Security Alliance publishes the Consensus Assessments Initiative Questionnaire, a widely used set of questions that maps to the controls buyers actually ask about. Completing one once gives you a large share of your answer bank before anyone requests anything.
Answer the noes honestly, and pair each with a compensating control and a date. “We do not run formal quarterly access reviews. There is one operator with production access, MFA is enforced, and we intend to add a documented review in Q4” passes far more reviews than founders expect. A stretched yes that unravels under a follow-up question fails the whole assessment, including the parts that were true.
Mark inapplicable items as inapplicable, with one line of reasoning. Most questionnaires are written for vendors who run their own facilities and employ staff. “We operate no physical data centres; hosting is provided by our infrastructure vendor, whose certifications are listed in our subprocessor section” is a complete answer, not an evasion, and reviewers accept it routinely.
Route the infrastructure questions to your subprocessors. A large share of what a questionnaire asks about physical security, network hardening, and data-centre controls is answered by your host’s own compliance reports. Point at them by name instead of writing prose about controls you do not operate.
Speed beats polish here. The first questionnaire will cost you most of a day. The third takes an hour if you kept the bank, and returning it in 48 hours with three admitted gaps does more for the deal than a flawless document two weeks later, because the champion’s momentum is decaying the entire time you write.
The legal and sales documents it should link
The security page is also a routing table. Technical buyers and their legal teams will want documents, and the page should point to each so the deal does not stall while someone hunts for a link. Three matter most.
The DPA, your data processing agreement. Any buyer subject to GDPR will ask for one before data changes hands. Link to it, or to a request flow. Having a DPA ready, even a standard template reviewed once by a lawyer, signals that you have done a real B2B deal before, or prepared to.
The subprocessor list. This often lives on the security page itself, but it is also a standalone artifact buyers want to subscribe to for change notifications. Keep it current. A new third party that touches customer data goes on the list before the integration ships, not after a buyer notices.
The privacy policy. Distinct from the DPA. The privacy policy describes what you do with personal data in general; the DPA is the contractual commitment to a specific business customer. Link both, and make sure the subprocessors named in one match the other.

The failures are predictable, and each one is cheap to avoid.
No fake badges. A trust-seal image that links nowhere, or a logo for an audit you have not passed, is the fastest way to fail a security review. The reviewer clicks it, finds nothing behind it, and now distrusts the whole page.
No military-grade. The phrase means nothing technically, and to a security reader it tells them the author does not understand encryption. Say AES-256 at rest, or TLS in transit, or whatever you actually run. Specifics build trust; slogans burn it.
No vague claims. Bank-level security, enterprise-grade, hardened by default: adjectives with no mechanism. Replace each with a sentence a reviewer can verify. If you cannot make it specific, you do not yet have the control, and the honest move is to put it on the roadmap.
No implied certifications. Do not format a planned SOC 2 to look finished. Do not say compliant when you mean working toward compliance. That gap is exactly what a reviewer is paid to catch.
No copy-paste of someone else’s page. Borrowing Stripe’s structure is fine; borrowing Stripe’s claims is fraud. A page that describes a company you are not is worse than no page.

The solo-founder version

Under each, write two to four sentences describing what you actually do. The whole thing fits on a screen. A reviewer reading a tight, specific page from a named founder trusts it more than a bloated page assembled from a template by someone who never touched production.
Lean on your platform honestly. A modern Cloudflare and managed-database stack hands you a lot of real security for free: TLS, encryption at rest, DDoS protection, tenant isolation. Put your name and a real contact on it. The solo-founder advantage is that the person reviewing your security can reach the person who built it. A reviewer who can email the founder directly about a control feels safer than one routed into a support queue.
Keep it honest about size. The reviewer can already tell you are early, so the page that wins is the one that reads like a careful one-person company rather than a bad imitation of a 200-person one.
